DVD Recorders with a Hard Drive

Welcome to our DVD Recorders with a Hard Drive page, these are DVD recorders that have a built in hard drive on which you can record television programmes. Recording onto a hard drive is much easier than recording onto a DVD as you do not need any blank DVD's, the hard drive is in-built into the DVD recorder so you need never worry about blank media (until your hard drive is full!).

Hard drives are usually used in computers and are what computers use to store information, when you install a game or save a document on your computer is it stored on the hard drive. Hard drives have recently been used in other devices though so that they can store large amounts of information easily, for example Xbox games consoles have a hard drive so that they can access information more quickly.

There are also other devices that record television programmes in the same way that a DVD recorder with a hard drive does, for example the Sky+ digital boxes have a built in hard drive and so do the Tivo set top boxes. Most DVD recorders with a hard drive work in a similar way, they have a nice on screen menu that lists all of the television channels and the programmes that are on those channels. You can then simply select a programme from the lists and press the record button, the programme will then be recorded when it starts so there is no need for setting timers or using Videoplus codes. Most DVD recorders have this functionality but some don't so check before you buy, to get the television programme information they will either need to use the digital reception or use a telephone connection to get the information.

Having a hard drive with a DVD recorder also allows for some very cool features such as pausing live television and recording one programme while you are watching another, these features were made famous by the Sky+ digital boxes and these features are available in many DVD recorders. They can pause live television because when you press pause the hard drive starts recording and when you press play it starts playing from when you pressed pause, it then keeps recording and playing as you are behind the actual program being broadcast so you can keep watching. You can also exit the live pause should you choose, this will jump you forward so you will miss some of the programme you are watching, another cool thing you can do here is fast forward as you are behind the programme being broadcast and this is great at commercial breaks as you can just fast forward them. When in this live pause mode or watching anything you have recorded you can also rewind, this is excellent if you missed something or want to see something again.

The hard drives that come with the DVD recorder vary in size with the size being stated like 80GB, the GB part means Gigabytes which is the standard measurement for computer storage (gigabytes are made up of 1024 megabytes). The fact with hard drives is that the more gigabytes the hard drive has the more space it has to store information so the larger the hard drive in the DVD recorder that you buy the more room you will have to store television programmes. So it's a good idea to get the largest hard drive that you can afford when you buy a DVD recorder with a hard drive as the space will come in useful, large programmes like football matches can take up allot of room so the extra space is always nice and you may also choose to keep some favourite programmes (or even whole series') on the hard drive for a long time.

Another advantage of having a hard drive on the DVD recorder is that you can transfer television programmes and films between the hard drive and blank DVD's so if you have a film or television programme that you have recorded onto the hard drive and want to keep you can transfer it onto a DVD to free up space on the hard drive.
