Progressive scan is a technology used in some DVD players to improve the quality of the picture on the screen, it works by scanning individual picture lines in sequence rather than alternately (interlaced) which is how non-progressive scan DVD players work, this maximises the clarity of digital images from the DVD. The effect that progressive scan has on the picture quality is quite large, the picture has more detail and less flicker as the picture is being drawn in a better way.

Progressive scan was developed for use on computer monitors as it is computer style images and text that suffer most with old interlaced scan system, without progressive scan text and computer images would not display well on computer monitors.
