There are a few different types of blank DVD media that you can buy and different DVD recorders support different types of blank DVD media, if you are buying a DVD recorder make sure you buy the correct blank DVD media as if you don't the DVD recorder will not record onto the blank DVD. With blank DVD media (as well as blank CD media) there are discs that you can record onto once and discs that you can recorded onto as many times as you like, discs that can be recorded onto once always end in an 'R' (such as DVD-R) and discs that can be copied onto several times end in an 'RW' (such as DVD-RW). The main types of blank DVD media are:
| DVD-R And DVD-RW | The blank DVD media with the '-' symbol record onto the DVD by finding space that is not already used, this means that it will not record over anything that you have already recorded onto the blank DVD. These DVD's can only be played in DVD recorders that support DVD-R And DVD-RW discs so consider this if you are buying a DVD recorder.
| | DVD+R And DVD+RW | The blank DVD media that has the '+' symbol does not look for blank space and will record just like a VHS tape, this means that any previous recordings will be lost. The advantage with these blank DVD's is that they are compatible with all DVD players so you do not need DVD players or recorders that support a specific disc type, this makes it much easier to share your recorded DVD's.
| | DVD-RAM | DVD RAM discs are more intended for computer use and do not work on most DVD players and recorders so check that your DVD player or recorder supports these if you wish to use them. The DVD RAM discs so have advantages though as they enable you to do cool things like pause live television programmes and watch one programme on the disc while another is being recorded. |
